As I hiked, I came across this juvenlie Great Blue Heron; we almost ran into each other - we were about 20 feet apart before we noticed each other. For this reason (and probably a lot to do with its youth), it allowed me to stay close and watch as it fished for tadpoles. I was very shocked it was perfectly happy fishing with me just 6 feet away, as though I didn't exist.
I've wanted to visit Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge for years, but haven't until last Thursday for various reasons. Though it's the middle of eagle nesting season and most eagles are hidden and guarding their eggs, there were still a few active bald and golden eagles I spotted; they were, however either in their nests over 1/2mi away, or taking flight over the water, also too far away to photograph.
